Charles "Charlie" Stein
August 9, 1939 - July 29, 2024
Charles Edward Stein, 84, of Custar, Ohio passed away Monday afternoon, July 29, 2024 at the Bridge Hospice Care Center, Bowling Green, Ohio.
He was born August 9, 1939 in Wood County, Ohio to the late Frank and Alice (Storeholder) Stein. Charlie was a 1957 graduate of Portage High School.
On July 2, 1960 he married Jeanette (Schneider) Stein and they recently celebrated their 64th Wedding Anniversary. They were constant companions and enjoyed all life offered them.
Charlie was a lifelong farmer and also worked as a welder at the former Daybrooks of Bowling Green. He had a natural ability to repair things and could handle himself with just about any challenge around the farm. He was skilled in woodworking and did many projects with his sons over the years.
At a young age, he developed a passion for sports. He enjoyed playing them and when his playing days were over, he found joy in watching and following his favorite teams. He was an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns and Ohio State Buckeyes. Locally, Charlie and Jeanette would attend basketball games at BGSU and cheer on the men and women basketball teams. If he missed a game or needed an update, you could assure yourself he was checking his newspaper the next day.
He was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church, Custar and a former 4-H Club Advisor.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Jeanette; children, Diana (Steve) Challen; Michael (Kathy) Stein; Steven (Amy) Stein; grandson, Dan (Stacy) Challen; step granddaughters, Bailee Burgard; Carlee Burgard; great granddaughter, Olivia Challen and sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Haas.
He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Edwin Stein; Mary Seifert; James Stein; Patricia Stein and Marcella Clingenpeel.
A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 1, 2024 at St. Louis Catholic Church, Custar with Fr. Francis Mariadas officiating. Graveside services will be in the church cemetery and a luncheon will follow in the school basement.
Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m., prior to the mass at the church.
