Emily Martin Obituary

Emily M. Martin
October 30, 1924 - January 23, 2023

Emily Margaret Martin, 98, of Deshler, Ohio passed away Monday, January 23, 2023 at the Meadows of Leipsic, Ohio.

She was born in Carey, Ohio on October 30, 1924 to the late Fred and Sylvia (Rumschlag) Pieracini.

Emily was a 1942 graduate of Deshler High School.  Shortly after high school she worked as a clerical worker at the former Erie Proving Ground, Army facility in Ottawa County, Ohio.  In 1945 she met and married Harry Martin and they were married on November 26, 1945.  She would follow Harry as he served our country and she continued to work for the military in the finance department at Fort Bragg, North Carolina and then at the National Guard Bureau at The Pentagon.

In 1947, after Harry was honorably discharged, they moved back to Deshler and started working alongside Emily's family at Pieracini's Confectionary.  A family business since1926,  they eventually changed the name to Martin's Confectionary and continued its operations until 1984.  This restaurant was a famous stop for the community and school age kids at lunchtime for her homemade sloppy joes and coney dogs.

In 1949, Emily and Harry welcomed a son, Freddy.  Freddy lived with them and worked alongside his parents after high school until the confectionary's closing in 1984.

Harry preceded Emily in death in 1982 and Freddy passed away in 2020.  She was also preceded in death by her only brother, Carl Pieracini; and devoted caregivers, David and Janice Seemann.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Deshler, former member of the church council and the Bavarian Club, Deshler.  Over the years, Emily was very athletic and participated in several volleyball, softball and bowling leagues.  She and Harry were avid dancers, enjoyed motorcycles and their annual vacations to Myrtle Beach.  When Emily moved to the former Oak Grove Healthcare Center, Deshler and then the Meadows of Leipsic, she kept her spirits up by never missing a Bingo game, greeting and welcoming visitors and by becoming a favorite resident to the workers and nurses.

Emily is survived by her extended family, Kevin and Kris Seemann; Kirk and Carla Seemann; Kent and Jill Seemann; Mike and Joan Meyer; special friends, Ronald & Judy Maas and their children, Dean and Kristine Maas; Jackie and Jon Bower; Steve Maas; Carol and Julie Christman and cousin, Steve (Kathryn) Pieracini.

A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Deshler with Fr. Art Niewiadomski officiating.  Graveside services will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Deshler.

Visitation will be from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday at Feehan-Rodenberger Funeral Home, Deshler and 10-11 a.m., Monday at the church prior to the mass.
