Sandra R. Honemann

February 15, 1937 – August 15, 2024

   Sandra Ruth Honemann, 87, of Hamler, Ohio passed away Thursday afternoon    , August 15, 2024 at the Bridge Hospice Care Center, Bowling Green.

   She was born February 15, 1937 in Malinta, Ohio, to the late Friedrick and Ella (Parritt) Sperzel. 

   Sandy was a 1955 graduate of Malinta-Grelton High School and then enrolled at Bowling Green State University and received her Bachelor of Comprehensive Social Studies/Speech in 1959.  Later in life, she returned to BGSU to obtain her Masters in American Studies in 1970.

   After graduating college she married Frederick “JR” Honemann on June 27, 1959.  They were married for over 63 years and JR preceded her in death on March 13, 2023.

   Sandy was a lifelong learner and teacher.  She began her teaching career as a 5th grade teacher at McClure Elementary.  She would also teach at Malinta-Grelton as an English teacher; at Continental High School as a US Government and English teacher and then in 1975 she took a job as a History/English teacher at Liberty Center Schools and worked there for 20 years.  After over 30 years of teaching, she took a supervisor position with Sienna Heights University as an adjunct faculty educator.  She completed her career in 2012.  She was also proud to spend a year in Prague in the Czech Republic in 1991 as a Fulbright Scholar Teacher of English.  She was dedicated to sharing her time and talents to young people and young teachers.  She was a member of the Malinta-Grelton Alumni Association; Henry County Retired Teachers, Ohio Retired Teachers Association and Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.

   She was a member of the former Malinta EUB Church and a longtime faithful member of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Deshler.  She was always active in the church choir, as a Sunday school teacher, catechism teacher, with the Ladies of Peace and participated in bible studies.  Her strong devotion and love for music provided her abundant joy.  Sandy loved to sing and became active with the Toledo Opera Chorus and Opera Guild and the Henry County Chorale.  She remained active with these organizations well into her last years of life.  Sandy recently established an annual Opera Cadre for local students to experience the Toledo Opera at no cost.

   Locally in Hamler, Sandy enjoyed the Luminary 7; Hamler Heritage Society, Friends of Hamler Library, Wide-a-Wake Club, Henry County Historical Society, Patrick Henry Public School Library Board, was a past 4-H advisor and bowled in leagues for several years.

   Sandy is survived by a brother, Walter (Joan) Sperzel; sister, Kathryn Skaff; brother-in-law, Clark Darling; niece, Kristin (Roger) Davenport; nephews, Walter (Stella) Sperzel, Jr.; Mathew (Toinette) Skaff; Adam (Jorey) Skaff and great nieces and nephews, Kristin; Andres; Lucia; Audrey; Alex; Katie and Brianna.

   She was also preceded in death by a sister, Jo Ann Darling.

   Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 20, 2024 at Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Deshler with Rev. Kurtis Freimuth officiating.  Graveside services will follow in the church cemetery with a luncheon in the church fellowship hall.

   Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. on Monday, August 19, 2024 at Feehan-Rodenberger Funeral Home, Deshler with a Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Service at 7:30 p.m.  Additional visitation will be from 10-11 a.m., Tuesday prior to the services at the church.

   Memorials are suggested to Peace Lutheran Evangelical Church.
